about

For many centuries in Christianity, Mother Mary has been a symbol of mercy and compassion. This chant draws from the 4th century Greek liturgical prayer, Kyrie Eleison-Christe Eleison, as an invocation to the blessed Mother of mercy and her son, Jesus the Christ.

The phrase, or one of its equivalents in other languages, is one of the most often repeated in Eastern Christianity; and is believed to be the origin of the Jesus Prayer attributed to the monastic Desert Fathers in the 5th century. The phrase is usually translated as "Lord have mercy, Christ have mercy," and has also been translated as "let me be an instrument of mercy."
